Short answer: Paint condition, vehicle size, how many polishing stages you want, and how much decontamination is needed first. Paint condition is by far the biggest of the four. Two identical cars can differ by a full day of work, which is why we quote per vehicle rather than publishing a price list.
Search for paint correction prices, and you’ll find some Birmingham detailers publishing a figure and others quoting per car. Both are defensible. Only one is honest about what correction actually involves.
Here’s what you’re paying for, what moves the number, and how to compare two quotes that look similar on paper but aren’t.
You’re paying for time, not product
Compound and polish cost very little. The machine is a one-off purchase. What you’re buying is hours, and specifically the hours in the middle of the job.
Machine work to reduce swirls, light scratches and oxidation is the longest stage of any detail, and the one most mobile operators skip. That’s the entire pricing question in one sentence.
A cheap correction quote is almost always one where the correction has been shortened or removed: a wash, a light polish that fills more than it levels, and a protective product on top. It looks impressive for three weeks, then the swirls come back, because they were never removed.
The four things that move the quote
1. Paint condition
The biggest variable by a distance. Paint hand-washed since new might need one refining stage. Paint that’s had years of automatic car washes may need cutting before refining, and cutting takes considerably longer. This is why the make and model tells us almost nothing: a three-year-old hatchback through a brush wash fortnightly can need more work than a ten-year-old car that’s been looked after. 2. Vehicle size
More panels mean more machine time at every stage. A large SUV or estate has more surface area to decontaminate, correct and finish than a supermini. It doesn’t mean harder work, just more of it.
3. How much correction you want
This is a choice, not a diagnosis, and it’s the one customers are least often told about. A single-stage polish that markedly improves the finish costs less than a multi-stage correction chasing a near-flawless result. Both are legitimate. On a daily driver, the single stage is frequently better value, because you get most of the visual improvement for a fraction of the time and you preserve clear coat for the future. Any detailer only offering you the top tier isn’t giving you the full picture.
4. Decontamination required
Correction can’t start until the surface is genuinely clean. Heavy tar, iron fallout, tree sap or overspray all add preparation time before a machine touches the car. A vehicle parked under trees or near industrial areas usually needs more of this than one kept in a garage.
What’s included at each level
- Machine polish. A single refining stage for lighter defects such as light swirling, fine scratches and dull or patchy paint.
- Swirl and scratch removal. A more involved multi-stage process using a cutting stage before refining, for more noticeable marks.
- Paint restoration. Our major paint correction detail and most popular detailing service. If your car has light scratches or swirl marks, mention them when you enquire. A two- to three-stage machine polish may be needed, and it’s far better to establish that before the appointment than on the day.
How to compare two Birmingham quotes
Two quotes can differ substantially, and both be fair. These questions tell you which is which.
- How many polishing stages are included? A single stage and a three-stage correction are different jobs. If the quote doesn’t say, ask.
- Is decontamination included first? Polishing over bonded contamination drags it across the paint and creates new defects.
- What happens to the polishing oils? They need stripping with a panel wipe before any coating goes on. Vague answers here usually mean the step is being skipped.
- How long will the car be worked on? Correction takes hours. A quote that includes correction and a two-hour slot doesn’t add up.
- Is the paint being assessed, or quoted from a photo? We assess properly before starting so the right level of correction is applied.
- Is travel included? We’ll tell you straight whether travel is included or surcharged for your postcode.
What correction cannot fix at any price
No amount of money makes a scratch polishable once it’s gone too deep. Damage through to the colour coat, primer or bare metal cannot be polished back, because the paint is physically gone. Protecting the result

Protection isn’t compulsory. But correcting paint and then leaving it bare means the swirls return on exactly the schedule that produced them.
Mobile paint correction in Birmingham

Frequently asked questions
Why don’t you publish a fixed price for paint correction?
Because two cars of the same model can need very different amounts of work. A fixed list would mean overcharging the easy jobs and underquoting the hard ones, and underquoted jobs are where corners get cut.
Can you quote paint correction from photos?
For an indication, often yes. Daylight photos taken at an angle where the marks catch the light are genuinely useful. The final quote follows an assessment.
Is multi-stage correction always better?
No. It achieves more, takes longer and uses a clearer coat. On a lot of cars, a single stage delivers most of the improvement and leaves more paint for the future.
Does correction remove every scratch?
No. Defects within the clear coat can be removed or dramatically reduced. Damage through to primer or metal needs paint.
