Research ceramic coating prices across the West Midlands and you’ll find quotes varying enormously. There’s a good reason for that, and it isn’t that some detailers are simply more expensive.

Professional coating isn’t a product applied to a freshly washed car. Most of the appointment happens before the coating comes out of the bottle, and that’s the part that varies from car to car.

Why there’s no fixed price

We quote per vehicle rather than from a list, because two cars of the same model can need very different amounts of work. A tailored quote accounts for vehicle size and type, the preparation the paint needs, whether you want Ceramic or Graphene, which surfaces are being protected, and any additional machine polishing included.

What affects ceramic coating cost?

1. Preparation before coating

The biggest variable, and the one most likely to explain a large gap between two quotes. Coatings need a properly cleaned surface to bond to, which means removing bonded contamination rather than just washing visible dirt away. A coating is also optically clear, so it locks in whatever is underneath it for years. Where the paint needs it, machine polishing forms part of the process, and paint that has had years of automatic car washes needs considerably more of it than paint that has been looked after. This is the same factor that drives paint correction cost generally.

2. Vehicle size

More panels mean more surface area to clean, prepare and coat at every stage. A compact hatchback needs less time and product than a large SUV, estate or luxury saloon.

3. Ceramic or graphene

Protection isn’t limited to painted bodywork. Graphene can also go onto wraps, wheels, lights, plastic trim and carbon fibre. More surfaces mean more preparation, product and application time.

What’s actually included?

The value comes from the whole process, not the coating product. A booking runs through:

• Thorough cleaning. pH-neutral snow foam and a soak, a pressure rinse, then wheels and arches cleaned separately with acid-free products.
• Chemical and mechanical, because a coating bonds to contamination as readily as to paint. Tar, iron fallout and bonded deposits all have to come off, followed by a clay stage.
• Surface preparation. A two-bucket contact wash with a grit guard, drying with plush microfibre, machine polishing where the paint needs it, then a panel wipe to strip every trace of polishing oil.
• Coating application. Applied panel by panel and levelled within its working window, followed by aftercare guidance before we leave.

Skipping the panel wipe alone is one of the most common causes of early coating failure. It’s also invisible to the customer, which is exactly why cheap quotes are worth questioning.

Body Armour Ceramic: up to three years

Body Armour Ceramic uses hydrophobic technology to repel water, dirt and grime while making future washing easier. It enhances colour and gloss and provides strong UV resistance, so the paint doesn’t fade or oxidise.

Body Armour Graphene: up to five years

Body Armour Graphene creates a highly hydrophobic barrier designed to repel water and contaminants, making routine washing faster. It offers high UV and chemical resistance, is specified at pH 2 to 13 with a 120-degree water contact angle and covers several exterior surfaces beyond painted bodywork.

For a car you intend to keep, graphene means one application rather than two, and the second application would have needed the preparation work all over again.

Is ceramic coating worth the cost?

It makes most sense if you plan to keep the vehicle for several years, want longer-lasting protection than short-term products, drive regularly through changing UK weather, and want maintenance to be easier rather than to disappear.

It makes the least sense if you’re handing the car back shortly, or if you’ll keep using automatic brush washes, which will scour a coating exactly as they scour bare paint.

The useful comparison isn’t against the cheapest quote. It’s what that quote includes. A price well below the rest usually means preparation has been shortened, and preparation is the part that decides whether the coating is still performing in year four.
